Twilio/carrier-required toll-free SMS messaging regulatory information
Proof of consent (opt-in/opt-out) information
Opt-in is guaranteed through a multi-step process:
- Users opt-in by sending the first SMS message to the WXSMS number, which is not publicly distributed (i.e., users must specifically request to know the number).
- This SMS information service only replies to individual requests initiated by users (mainly myself) who first message the WXSMS service by text message; the user-inititated request for information is considered to be express written consent granted for the server to reply to that request. The service then replies with the requested information, usually in one message, but could be up to four messages depending on the nature of the request.
- Consent is guaranteed becuase the message of the user's request must be in a specific format, which users must know to interact with the service. The server will simply ignore incoming messages that are not formatted correctly without replying.
- The user is automatically opted out after completion of the request; no further messages are sent unless the user opts back in by sending additional requests.
Privacy policy
Neither Nicholas Stauffer nor the WXSMS server collect, store, track, or share any personal information or data in any way. Twilio, the messaging service that WXSMS uses to process SMS messaging requests, and the operators of intermediate cellular, satellite, ham radio, or other Internet networks that users use to access the WXSMS service may have their own more invasive privacy policies and may log communications through their networks.
Terms of service
By sending an SMS message requesting weather or astronomy data to WXSMS, users agree to receive a single, complete reply from WXSMS with the information requested; WXSMS will not provide any self-initiated communications. To prevent spam or unwanted messages, WXSMS will not reply to any messages that do not conform to the required WXSMS request message format. If you do not agree to these terms and do not want to receive a reply from WXSMS, do not send a request to WXSMS.
